Success or failure in education can be interpreted in terms of coping with educational demands. The concept of coping has been extended from psychology of stress and critical life events to everyday life and biography under conditions of de-standardised life courses.

The GOETE project extends the perspective of education towards the dimension of coping with learning and education. It aims at closing knowledge gaps as regards the social embedding of school and formal education, not in terms of general social structure but in terms of direct interaction and experience of education and support, especially with regard to comparative analysis.
